A basic tenet of social constructionist theory is that the distinction between the knower and the known is never as sharp as supposed by logical positivism. Culture infuses science and science infuses culture. The questions researchers think to ask in their scientific endeavors are influenced by an understanding of the basic nature of the phenomenon they wish to study. Understanding is heavily influenced by cultural precepts and worldviews that are invisible to those who operate within these frameworks. However, these invisible frameworks necessarily influence the approach to a field of inquiry. Views about aging women, sexuality, and menopause are therefore particularly relevant to deconstructing how these topics have been studied and understood.
