Service on Tenure and Promotion Committees

Women are likely to serve on tenure committees but unlikely to chair them. As shown in Table 5-3, in 57 percent of tenure cases, there was at least one woman present on the tenure committee. In 690 cases for which the gender of the com­mittee chair was known, it was a man in 90 percent of the cases. It was similar for promotion cases: in 51 percent of the promotion cases there was at least one woman present on the promotion committee. In 459 cases for which the gender of the committee chair was known, it was a woman in 13 percent of these cases.
