1.2 Data Analysis
During data analysis, we used the rich insights available in the case to help us reconstruct and reveal the collaboration process. Template coding (King, 1998) and causal loop diagram (CLD) mapping were conducted to analyze the data. Template coding was used to generate categories to represent the concepts of interest while CLD mapping helped to interrelate the template codes into a causal relationship.
The original template was generated by synthesizing the literature on gender, anonymity and group processes. Template analysis consisted of perusing the data and modifying the template accordingly until a stable template was obtained. The entire analysis was highly iterative and involved moving back and forth among the data and existing literature. The final template based on the data analysis is presented in Table 2.
Next, the template is further verified with each case separately and the mapping technique of CLD was adapted to interrelate the above-generated templates causally (Klein & Huynh, 1999). A CLD consists of variables connected by arrows denoting the causal influences among the variables. Each causal link is assigned a polarity, either positive or negative to indicate the direction of causal relationship. Subsequently, cross-case analysis was conducted to examine the overall pattern and verify the causal relationships between variables in stage two. A detailed analysis will be presented in the following sections.
