ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Undertaking a book such as this is a huge task and one that I could never have done without the help of many smart, creative, and fun people. Recognition should first go to all my students who, over the years, have opened themselves up to me and felt comfortable enough to share intimate, and sometimes painful, details of their lives. I know that their voices throughout this book will help students truly understand the complexity of human sexuality.

Second, and of equal importance, a big thank you goes to my family, who helped me pull off the Second Edition. I couldn’t have done it without their support and encouragement. They understood my crazy schedule and worked hard to help make life manageable in our household. My husband was an endless support in a million ways and allowed me to constantly interrupt him for statistical and mathematical clarifications. My children also helped me pull this together and through the process have continued to learn—I am certain they will all grow up with a true understanding of the importance of sexuality in their lives. In addition, my extended family deserves a great deal of thanks, including Susanne, Bob and Janice, Rheta and Gordon, and other family members and relatives who provided a wealth of long-distance support throughout the entire project. As in all projects of such magnitude, there are hundreds of others who supported me with friendship, advice, information, laughter, and a focus on the “big picture.”

The Second Edition of Sexuality Now is truly the result of a team effort—and the team was fantastic. My Senior Editor, Marianne Taflinger, deserves more thanks than I can ever give her. Her vision of Sexuality Now helped give it new life. Marianne has been a constant source of support and encouragement throughout both editions of this book. She also helped assemble one of the best Second Edition teams ever put together. A big thank you goes to Kristin Makarewycz, Developmental Editor, who has been terrific— her tireless efforts, insights, and suggestions helped make Sexuality Now all it could be. Lori Johnson, Editorial Production Project Manager, was at the helm, calmly and gracefully keeping everything and everyone on track. Mary Anne Shahidi was by far the best copyeditor I have ever worked with. Ellen Brownstein, Chapter Two Editoral Production Services, was the cherry on the top of the sundae. She also helped manage the details, gently keeping us all on track under tremendous time pressures. There are numerous others whose help was invaluable, including Chris Caldeira, Dory Schaeffer, Vernon Boes, Darin Derstine, Jennifer Alexander, Lucy Faridany, Roman Barnes, Sarah Harkrader, Gary Clark of Graphic World, and Diane Beasley of Diane Beasley Design. You guys are the best. I will look forward to a long and productive relationship with everyone at Wadsworth/Thomson Learning.

And thank you to the many others who so willingly gave their time and/or support, especially students, Kareem Allwood, Caitlin Bailey, Kevin Ball, Lisa Belval, Becky Czlapinski, Rachel Gearhart, Jillian Goldberg, Jamie Graves, Cherry Hodges, Alan Kelley, Joanna Melon, Steve Michaud, Elizabeth Murphy, Robert Oswald, Todd Rice, Kris Rochette, Ashley Seiffert, Kara and Krista Tesoriero, Pricilla Thorn, Christianne Wolfson, Ebony Wright, and Christine Zuendt. A big thanks goes to Lisa Belval and Kris Rochette for their special contributions to this Second Edition. Also thank you to my colleagues and friends, without whom this would not have been possible, including Kim Acquaviva, Genevieve Ankeny, Demetrius Bagley, Caryn Christensen, Maxine Chuck, Bob Conover, Barb Curry, Keith D’Angelo, Ken Decker, Karen Hicks, David Holmes, Peg Horne, Will Hosler, Petra Lambert, Lisa Lepito, Carole Mackenzie, Megan Mahoney, Konnie McCaffree, Mike Morrow, Kirsten Neptun, Leslie Obrizzo, Robyn Oches, Monica Rodriguez, Debbie Schiltz, Maryann Schuppe, Diana Shanley, Bill Stayton, Toby, Peterson Toscano, the Tsacoyeanes family, Meghan Waskowitz, Laurie Watters, Gracemarie Welter, John and Nina Whitnah, and Rand Ziegler.

I also want to thank Maxine Effensen Chuck and Paul Root Wolpe whose original hard work helped lay some of the groundwork for this textbook. Maxine has been an endless support system throughout all of our years of friendship and it would have been hard to have done this Second Edition without her. I also am grateful to Paul for his support and understanding in this ongoing endeavor.

I would also like to thank all the authors of our Second Edition supplements: Shirley Ogletree, Teri Tomatich, Debra Hull, John H. Hull, Margit Berman, and Alishia Huntoon. As good as a textbook can be, it is only one piece of the teaching puzzle.

Finally, it is important to acknowledge the contributions of the reviewers who have carefully read my manuscript and offered many helpful suggestions. I would like to thank them all for their time and dedication to this project.
