NEW TO THIS EDITION ‘

There are many new changes to the Second Edition. We have totally reworked the majority of figures—including all new sex position art in Chapter 10—and added many new photos throughout the textbook. This gives the Second Edition a wonderfully fresh and contemporary feel.

We have added a new feature entitled Sex in Real Life to this edition. This feature highlights changing practices and cutting-edge research, and some are drawn from material that appeared in the What Do Women Think? What Do Men Think? and Sex Facts & Fantasies features from the First Edition. Students and professors alike both thought these features didn’t work as well as I had hoped and, in reworking them, I realized one feature that concentrated on important current issues was critical and a wonderful addition to the Second Edition.

Other new additions include historical timelines, pronunciation guides, active summaries, links to videos by chapter, and movie recommendations. Three new historical timelines—on the history of sexuality and television (Chapter 1), key developments in

sex research (Chapter 2), and assisted reproduction (Chapter 12)—help facilitate student learning and provide visual material to maintain student interest (see Chapter 1, page 6; Chapter 2, page 40; and Chapter 12, page 376). A new pronunciation guide helps students understand how to pronounce difficult words—helping to improve student communication about sexuality. Active Summaries now appear at the end of each chapter, so that students can easily study and review material contained in each chapter. A variety of video links—including video panel discussions on GLB and transgendered/ transsexual individuals—also appear throughout the text, highlighting video segments by chapter geared to stimulate classroom discussion. Finally, we’ve also added a current or classic movie recommendation to the end of each chapter, which helps tie the material to popular culture for students. Clips of these movies may also be shown in class to facilitate class discussion.

As I look over the many changes made to the Second Edition, I think that one of the most important changes is the focus on multicultural diversity both within and outside the United States. You will find many new references to the importance of culture and ethnicity/race. This is an important addition and critical in the teaching of this material, especially given the rapidly changing ethnicity of Americans today (for examples, see Chapter 8, page 292; Chapter 9, pages 257, 258, 264, 270; and Chapter 10, page 292). Research on cross-cultural sexuality from Francoeur & Noonan’s (2004), The Continuum Complete International Encyclopedia of Sexuality is extensively reviewed and discussed throughout the text. Also see pages xxxviii-xxxix for indexes of cultural and gender coverage throughout the book.
