TSS can occur in persons of any age, sex, or race, but most reported cases have occurred in younger menstruating women using tampons. There has been a substantial reduction in the incidence of TSS in the last 10 years, which is primarily attributed to the changes in absorbency and composition of tampons available to the consumer (Meadows, 2000). Today, TSS is most common in women who forget to remove a tampon, which becomes a breeding ground for bacteria over a few days. TSS can be avoided by using less absorbent tampons, changing tampons regularly, or using sanitary pads instead of tampons
