‘I’m a girl who lost her reputation and never missed it.’ Mae West
Mae West (1893-1980) was a past mistress of innuendo and the eight — inch platform walk. She challenged the rules, was bold, raunchy and vulgar, and successfully delivered the message that women enjoy sexual attention too. She also left a trail of unique one-liners, from the classic ‘Come up and see me some time’ to the one and only ‘Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?’ Her 1926 play Sex, which she wrote and starred in, about a hooker looking to get away from it all with a rich husband, landed her in court for obscenity. West was sent to the can for 10 days, where she was allowed to wear silk instead of prison underwear. Sex reopened off-Broadway in 1999.
