Meredith Chivers of the Center for Addiction and Mental Health and J Michael Bailey of Northwestern University exposed 18 heterosexual men and 18 heterosexual women to two films, one of human sex, the other of bonobo monkey sex. The study, published in 2005, found the men were aroused by female humans only, while the women showed signs of arousal from humans (straight and gay) as well as animal copulation.
Psychiatry professor Barbara Bartlik was not surprised and suggested the men may have worried about being labelled homosexual or perverse and were therefore inhibited.
