Alices Adventures in Wonderland. How the first American screen version of the great fairy tale was created?

Almost all know that this year the well-known fairy tale of the British writer and mathematician Lewis Carroll "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland" celebrates the 150-year anniversary. But not all know that this year of the very first screen version of this fairy tale in America 105 years were executed. Alices Adventures in Wonderland. 7 years later after a brilliant premiere of the British version of the fairy tale which has become the first-ever screen version of Kerollovsky "Alice", the movie company of the great American inventor and businessman Thomas Edison (Thomas Edison) of Edison Manufacturing Company decided to release the film according to this book.

The well-known Edwin S. was appointed the director of a picture The malt liquor (Edwin Stanton Porter), presented to the world such masterpieces, as «A big robbery of a train» (The Great Train Robbery, 1903), «Jack and bean grain» (Jack And The Beanstalk, 1903) and «Rescued from an eagle nest» (Rescued From The Eagle’s Nest, 1908).

The fourteen-year Gladis Hyulitt (Gladys Hulette) who was those years at the peak of the career became Alice. Then Hyulitt was one of the most demanded actresses of the time: she acted in film in «Romeo and Juliette» (Romeo and Juliet, 1908), «The princess of nicotine» (Princess Nicotine, 1909) and «A dream in summer night» (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, 1909). By the way, by the beginning of the 30th years, after a train of tiny roles in films through passage, Gladis Hyulitt left a cinema and worked to the death in 1991 at radio.

Shooting according to L.Kerrol’s fairy tale took place in Bronx. The film consisted of 14 scenes. In total it went about 10 minutes (for 2 minutes more shortly than the British version). It should be noted, what exactly in the American statement appears the well-known scene of trial of the Jack of Worms which stole pretzels at Queen Chervey. Here only in the Malt liquor film, unlike a book plot, the Jack of Worms admits innocent and is released on freedom. Costume designers tried to repeat in accuracy images John Tenniel (John Tenniel) – the first illustrator "Alice".

The premiere took place in New York on September 9, 1910. Critics and the audience with delight accepted the film. Special admiration was deserved really by magnificent scenes of reduction of growth of Alice at the moment of acceptance of magic drink with use of animation effects. Many critics recognized that it was possible to Malt liquor technically at all worse than Cecil Hepuort (Cecil Hepworth) – the director of the British Alices version, to transfer similar visual changes.

The New York Dramatic Mirror newspaper in the review from September 14, 1910 called Edwin S. "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland" Malt liquor «the most interesting and original film shot lately». The Variety newspaper also approvingly responded about the fairy tale screen version, having emphasized that it is absolutely not worse than foreign films fairy tales which in a large quantity were shown at the American cinemas.

Unfortunately, our time was reached by some separate fragments of this statement in the bad quality, for the first time shown only in the late nineties in one of the documentary transfers devoted to "Alice in Wonderland". For this reason "Alice’s" first American statement is now almost unknown to general public. But the following statement of the fairy tale shot also in America five years later V. V. Young, it was fated to become "Alice’s" longest and best statement of times Great Mute.
