SCANDALS

SCANDALS‘You find out who your real friends are when you’re involved in a scandal.’ Liz Taylor

The Profumo Affair

MP John Profumo’s political career was ruined when news broke in 1963 that he had shared a mistress (albeit unknowingly) with an attache at the Soviet embassy. The woman in the middle was topless showgirl Christine Keeler who was immortalized in Lewis Morley’s photograph of her posing nude astride a chair, one of the iconic images of the 1960s.

Подпись: ★ DAVID MELLOR Another British Conservative MP caused a sensation when his sexual exploits with actress Antonia de Sancha in 1992 hit the papers - after she sold them the story. Mellor's career survived the fallout from the affair, but not the later uproar over free holidays. ★HUGH GRANT Making an unforgettable Hollywood appearance, the poster boy for foppish English charm suffered few personal or professional setbacks in 1995 upon being caught by the vice squad Подпись: receiving oral sex from sex worker Divine Brown on Sunset Boulevard. ★BILL CLINTON The 42nd president of the USA likewise endured little lasting damage following revelations that he had had sexual relations with intern Monica Lewinsky in 1998. She had confided her feelings to a colleague, who recorded phone conversations leading to Clinton's impeachment for perjury, but he was later acquitted. Apparently, he didn't realize oral sex was included in the definition of'sexual relations'.

GETTING AWAY WITH IT

‘Clinton lied. A man might forget where he parks or where he lives, but he never forgets oral sex, no matter how bad it is.’ Barbara Bush
